Kate Middleton Debuts Bold Red Houndstooth Coat on Sweden Trip

For all its associations with the British upper class, houndstooth is not a pattern often seen on Kate Middleton. You know who did have a famous houndstooth jacket, though? Princess Diana. And though the red Catherine Walker houndstooth that Kate wore during the second day of her Scandinavian tour may not have been a deliberate Diana tribute, it was an attention-grabbing look all the same. Diana paired her red houndstooth with two-toned heels, a red hat, and a black houndstooth skirt. But hey, it was the 90s. Kate paired her 2018 version with burgundy heels.

Accompanied by Sweden’s royal couple, Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Kate and William visited the Karolinska Institutet, where they met with leading doctors and researchers to discuss mental health, a cause they both champion through their charity, Heads Together. Then, they went on to the Matteusskolan school, where they were given a warm reception by children who were eager to meet them. They were there to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Youth Aware of Mental Health, which targets children ages 14 to 16, at the school and watched the children take place in a role-playing exercise.

Because they’re experts at royal visits, the couple took time for a meet-and-greet with the youngsters; according to People it was intended as a brief walk-by, but turned into a 10-minute event. Per the Daily Mail, William shook their hands and said “you’ve got cold hands” (it is in the dead of winter in Sweden), while Kate seemed concerned that the kids had layered enough: “Are you cold? Are you all wrapped up?”

Fifteen-year-old Lucas Tinseau was on hand with questions for Kate; he quizzed her on her knowledge of rap music: “I asked her if she knew J Hus,” Tinseau told the Daily Mail. “She said ‘I will look out for him.’”

Later, the two couples visited a Swedish department store, where they checked out British products being sold there. Like any good British couple on vacation, they finished the day with a spot of tea at Haga Palace.
