Montreal Canadiens: Cayden Primeau gets the start against Finland

Team USA (White) is getting their turn to play as well, and Montreal Canadiens prospect Cayden Primeau will be the man in net against Team Finland.

Team USA’s second team is ready to start at the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase (WJSS). Their first game will see them take on Team Finland which is without Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Jesse Ylonen, and Joni Ikonen. However, the Montreal Canadiens will still be represented through 2017 seventh-round pick Cayden Primeau.

The goaltender is also making his debut at the WJSS in high hopes of making a good enough impression to be an option at the championship tournament in December. Primeau was among the standouts in the NCAA among netminders putting up a flashy .931 save percentage. The 18-year-old also led the Huskies to a Beanpot championship including a shutout against Boston College.

His growth over the year has put him in the †˜steal’ department as far as 2018 drafted prospects and playing on the international stage will be the next step.

Primeau will have a lot of help in front of him with Quinn Hughes and Mattias Samuelsson on the blueline for Team USA (White). However, there’s going to be a lot of offence skill against him.

At the top of that list is Rasmus Kupari, Kaapo Kakko, and Linus Hyman. They were in both of those two U20 games last week against the Czech Republic with Kotkaniemi and displayed the ability to generate offence.

Primeau, like most successful NHL goaltenders, relies on his position to be successful in net. He can also make those game-saving stops that teams need when things aren’t going there way. If he can bring that to his performance tonight as well as the rest of the tournament, there’s no reason why USA Hockey shouldn’t look to him moving forward.

All eyes, including those from the Montreal Canadiens, will be on him during the game. How well he succeeds will be on how his team plays in front of him, but Primeau himself.
