The Canadiens' past and future converge in Finland; Koivu and Kotkaniemi meet for the first time

RAUMA, Finland â€" It happened organically, by chance. There was no ceremony to it, no formal introduction, nothing approaching a passing of the torch, figurative or otherwise.
But it was not happenstance.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Saku Koivu knew they would meet here at Kivikylä Arena, site of the Liiga alumni all-star game Friday, a glittering showcase of the greatest Finnish players of past and present. And, uniquely in Kotkaniemi’s case, future.
It was on neutral ground, less than an hour south of Kotkaniemi’s hometown of Pori and a little over an hour north of Koivu’s home in Turku. They live so close, yet the great from the Canadiens’ past and the hope for the Canadiens’ future had never met.
Until now.
